How Cold Laser Therapy Works
FDA-approved laser therapy (also called “cold laser”) is a modern, highly effective treatment designed to stimulate healing at the cellular level. It has been proven to be remarkably safe, painless, and effective for treating both acute injuries and chronic pain conditions.
Therapeutic lasers work by supplying energy to the body in the form of photons of light. These light particles are absorbed by tissues and cells, where they are used to accelerate the normal rate of tissue repair. This process — known as photobiomodulation — enhances cellular metabolism and improves the body’s natural healing response.
Unlike surgical or high-intensity lasers, low-level laser therapy does not generate heat and does not damage tissue. The lasers used for tissue stimulation are specifically calibrated to promote healing without harming cells. Over 30 years of clinical studies and practical use have demonstrated no known adverse effects.
Cold lasers are handheld devices, typically the size of a flashlight, that emit specific wavelengths of light to the targeted area. Our clinic’s chiropractor will place the laser directly over the injured tissue for several minutes. As the light energy penetrates the area, it can:
- Reduce inflammation and swelling
- Decrease pain and stiffness
- Accelerate cellular reproduction and tissue repair
- Stimulate fibroblast activity and collagen production
- Reduce formation of excess scar tissue
- Increase blood flow to the injured area
- Enhance nerve function and decrease nerve-related pain
Cold Laser Therapy is especially effective in treating stubborn or difficult-to-resolve conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, TMJ, plantar fasciitis, chronic back pain, and neck pain. It may also be used following a new injury to accelerate healing and prevent further tissue breakdown.
While some patients experience noticeable relief after the first treatment, others may require a series of 6–10 sessions to achieve lasting results. Acute injuries typically improve more quickly than chronic or long-standing conditions. Treatment frequency and duration are determined based on your specific diagnosis and severity.
You can also combine Cold Laser Therapy with other treatments for optimal results. If you're experiencing pain, we would be happy to help you determine whether this therapy is right for you.
