How We Help Whiplash!

Whiplash is a neck injury commonly associated with a sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head and neck. It is frequently associated with rear-end motor vehicle collisions, but similar injuries can also occur during sports, falls, or other events involving a sudden force to the neck.

Symptoms can vary from person to person and may include neck pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, headaches, shoulder or upper-back discomfort, and muscle tenderness or tension. Some people notice symptoms immediately, while others may become aware of discomfort later following an accident or injury.

At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, we provide acupuncture and complementary therapies that may be incorporated into a broader whiplash recovery plan to help manage pain, muscle tension, stiffness, and limitations in comfortable movement.

Because whiplash occurs following trauma, an appropriate evaluation is important before beginning complementary care, particularly when symptoms are severe, worsening, or accompanied by neurological changes.

Whiplash injuries can vary considerably, so care should be individualized based on the mechanism of injury, severity of symptoms, neck mobility, muscle function, activity limitations, health history, and stage of recovery.

Physical therapy and appropriate rehabilitation may help address neck mobility, strength, movement tolerance, and a gradual return to everyday activities. Acupuncture may be incorporated into care to help manage pain and related symptoms.

Massage Therapy, Cupping Therapy, and Acupressure may be considered for surrounding muscle tension when appropriate. Cold Laser Therapy may also be incorporated into care for selected musculoskeletal symptoms depending on the nature and stage of the injury.

Complementary therapies should not be described as mechanically realigning the cervical spine, repairing damaged tissue, or guaranteeing prevention of chronic symptoms. Whiplash following significant trauma may require medical evaluation, diagnostic imaging, or other care depending on the patient's symptoms.

How Can Whiplash Affect Daily Life?

Whiplash symptoms can interfere with work, driving, sleep, exercise, household activities, and other parts of everyday life. The impact can vary depending on the severity of the injury and the symptoms a person experiences.

Whiplash may be associated with:

  • Neck pain or tenderness
  • Neck stiffness
  • Reduced comfortable range of motion
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder or upper-back discomfort
  • Muscle tightness or tenderness
  • Difficulty comfortably turning the head while driving
  • Sleep disruption related to discomfort
  • Reduced tolerance for work, exercise, or everyday activity
  • Ongoing discomfort following an accident or injury

Symptoms following a motor vehicle collision or other significant trauma should not automatically be assumed to be uncomplicated whiplash. Neck pain can sometimes occur with fractures, disc injuries, nerve injuries, concussion, or other conditions that require medical evaluation.

Seek prompt medical attention following significant trauma if there is severe or rapidly worsening neck pain, loss of consciousness, confusion, severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, new numbness or weakness, difficulty walking, changes in coordination, vision changes, or other concerning neurological symptoms.

At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center, complementary care may be incorporated into an individualized recovery plan focused on helping manage discomfort, muscle tension, mobility, and everyday function while working alongside appropriate medical or rehabilitation care when needed.
