How We Support Patients With Scoliosis
Scoliosis is characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature and rotation of the spine. The degree of curvature and the symptoms associated with scoliosis can vary significantly from person to person.
Some people with scoliosis experience few or no symptoms, while others may develop back discomfort, muscle fatigue, stiffness, uneven muscle tension, or difficulty remaining comfortable during prolonged sitting, standing, walking, or other everyday activities.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, we provide acupuncture and complementary therapies that may be incorporated into a broader scoliosis care plan to help manage discomfort, surrounding muscle tension, stiffness, and mobility limitations.
Because scoliosis varies in type, severity, age of onset, progression, and symptoms, care should be individualized. Factors such as the degree of curvature, skeletal maturity, discomfort, mobility, strength, health history, and daily activities may all influence the appropriate approach.
Acupuncture and complementary therapies are intended to help manage symptoms associated with scoliosis rather than mechanically straighten the spine or correct the structural curvature. Appropriate medical monitoring, rehabilitation, bracing, or orthopedic care may also be recommended depending on the individual's age and severity of the curvature.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING
How Can Scoliosis Affect Daily Life?
The impact of scoliosis varies considerably. Mild scoliosis may cause few noticeable problems, while more significant curves or associated muscle imbalances may contribute to discomfort, fatigue, stiffness, and limitations during everyday activities.
Depending on its severity, scoliosis may be associated with:
- Back pain or discomfort
- Muscle tension or fatigue
- Back stiffness
- Uneven shoulders, waist, or hips
- Reduced comfortable mobility
- Difficulty sitting or standing comfortably for extended periods
- Fatigue during everyday activities
- Sleep disturbances related to discomfort
- Emotional or self-image concerns
- Reduced overall quality of life
More significant spinal curves can sometimes affect physical function and, in severe cases, may affect breathing. Children and adolescents with scoliosis may require periodic medical monitoring because spinal curvature can change as they grow.
Medical or orthopedic evaluation is especially important for a newly identified or visibly progressing spinal curve, significant or worsening pain, neurological symptoms, weakness or numbness, difficulty breathing, changes in walking or balance, or other new or concerning symptoms.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center, complementary care may be incorporated into an individualized plan focused on helping manage discomfort, muscle tension, mobility, and overall well-being while working alongside appropriate medical care.
