How We Help Tennis Elbow!
Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a tendon-related condition that typically causes pain and tenderness around the outside of the elbow. It commonly develops from repetitive gripping, lifting, wrist extension, or other activities that repeatedly load the muscles and tendons of the forearm.
Despite its name, tennis elbow does not only affect tennis players. It may also develop in people whose work, hobbies, exercise, or everyday activities involve repetitive hand, wrist, and forearm movements.
Symptoms may include outer elbow pain or tenderness, discomfort when gripping or lifting, forearm soreness, reduced grip strength, and pain during movements involving the wrist and elbow.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, we provide acupuncture and complementary therapies that may be incorporated into a broader tennis elbow care plan to help manage discomfort, surrounding muscle tension, stiffness, and limitations during everyday activity.
Because tennis elbow can vary in severity and duration, care should be individualized based on your symptoms, activity demands, grip strength, elbow and wrist mobility, health history, and recovery goals.
Physical therapy and appropriate rehabilitation may help address forearm strength, flexibility, tendon loading, movement patterns, and gradual return to work, exercise, or sports. Acupuncture, massage, cupping, and acupressure may be incorporated to help manage discomfort and surrounding muscle tension.
Shockwave Therapy may be considered for certain persistent tendon-related conditions such as tennis elbow, while Cold Laser Therapy may be incorporated into care for selected musculoskeletal conditions. The appropriate approach depends on the severity, duration, and characteristics of your symptoms.
These therapies should not be described as mechanically repairing a torn tendon or guaranteeing restoration of normal tendon structure. Persistent pain, significant weakness, or symptoms following an acute injury may require additional medical or orthopedic evaluation.

How Can Tennis Elbow Affect Daily Life?
Tennis elbow can make everyday activities involving the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow uncomfortable. Because these movements are involved in so many work, household, exercise, and recreational activities, persistent symptoms may have a noticeable impact on daily function.
Tennis elbow may be associated with:
- Pain or tenderness along the outside of the elbow
- Forearm soreness or stiffness
- Pain when gripping or squeezing objects
- Discomfort when lifting or carrying
- Reduced grip strength
- Pain with wrist or forearm movement
- Difficulty performing repetitive work tasks
- Difficulty participating comfortably in sports or exercise
- Difficulty with household and everyday activities
- Sleep disruption related to elbow discomfort
Persistent elbow symptoms should be appropriately evaluated. Pain around the elbow may sometimes be related to another tendon injury, joint condition, nerve irritation, or a different musculoskeletal problem rather than tennis elbow alone.
Seek prompt medical evaluation for severe pain following an injury, visible deformity, substantial swelling or bruising, sudden loss of strength or function, numbness or significant weakness in the arm or hand, or a popping sensation followed by difficulty using the arm.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center, complementary care may be incorporated into an individualized plan focused on helping manage discomfort, mobility, and overall function while supporting an appropriate return to work, exercise, sports, and everyday activity.
