How We Help Trigger Finger!

Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a condition that can cause pain, stiffness, catching, or locking when bending or straightening a finger or thumb. The condition involves the tendon and the surrounding sheath that help the finger move.

When the tendon or surrounding tissue becomes irritated or thickened, the tendon may not glide as smoothly through its normal pathway. This can result in a catching or popping sensation and, in some cases, a finger that temporarily becomes stuck in a bent or straight position.

Trigger finger can interfere with gripping objects, typing, writing, using tools, preparing food, exercising, and many other activities that depend on comfortable hand and finger movement.

At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, we provide acupuncture and complementary therapies that may be incorporated into a broader trigger finger care plan to help manage discomfort, surrounding soft-tissue tension, stiffness, and limitations during everyday hand use.

Because trigger finger can vary in severity, care should be individualized based on the finger or thumb involved, how frequently catching or locking occurs, hand function, activity demands, health history, and other contributing factors.

Physical therapy or appropriate hand rehabilitation may help address mobility, hand function, activity modification, and gradual return to comfortable use. Acupuncture, massage, and acupressure may be incorporated as complementary approaches to help manage discomfort and surrounding soft-tissue tension.

Cold Laser Therapy may be incorporated into care for selected musculoskeletal conditions. Shockwave Therapy may also be considered in selected cases involving persistent tendon-related symptoms. Whether either therapy is appropriate depends on the location, severity, duration, and characteristics of the condition.

Complementary therapies should not be described as mechanically releasing a narrowed tendon sheath, correcting a fixed finger deformity, or guaranteeing that injections or surgery will not be necessary. More significant or persistent trigger finger may require medical or hand-specialist evaluation.

How Can Trigger Finger Affect Daily Life?

Trigger finger can interfere with activities that depend on comfortable and coordinated finger movement. Even relatively simple tasks may become frustrating when a finger is painful, stiff, catching, or locking.

Trigger finger may be associated with:

  • Finger or thumb pain and tenderness
  • Stiffness, particularly after periods of inactivity
  • Clicking, popping, or catching during movement
  • A finger that temporarily locks in a bent or straight position
  • Difficulty comfortably bending or straightening the finger
  • Difficulty gripping or holding objects
  • Reduced hand dexterity during everyday tasks
  • Difficulty typing, writing, or using tools
  • Reduced comfort during work, hobbies, or exercise
  • Increasing difficulty using the affected hand comfortably

Persistent finger catching or locking should be appropriately evaluated. Symptoms that resemble trigger finger may sometimes overlap with arthritis, tendon injuries, joint problems, Dupuytren contracture, or other conditions affecting the hand and fingers.

Seek medical evaluation when the finger becomes persistently locked, symptoms significantly interfere with hand function, there is substantial swelling or redness, symptoms begin after a significant injury, or pain and loss of function are progressively worsening.

At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center, complementary care may be incorporated into an individualized plan focused on helping manage discomfort, mobility, and hand function while working alongside appropriate medical or rehabilitation care when needed.
