How We Help Heel Spurs!
Heel spurs, also known as calcaneal spurs, are bony growths that develop along the heel bone. Some heel spurs cause no symptoms, while others may be associated with heel pain and irritation of the surrounding soft tissues.
When symptoms are present, heel discomfort can make walking, standing, running, exercising, and other weight-bearing activities more difficult. Heel spurs may also occur alongside conditions affecting the surrounding tissues of the foot.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, we provide acupuncture and complementary therapies that may be incorporated into a broader care plan to help manage heel discomfort, surrounding soft-tissue tension, and mobility limitations.
Because heel pain can have several possible causes, care should be individualized based on the source of discomfort, associated soft-tissue involvement, activity level, footwear, and other contributing factors.
Acupuncture and complementary therapies do not remove or shrink a heel spur. Instead, complementary care may be used as part of a broader approach focused on helping manage discomfort and supporting the surrounding muscles and soft tissues.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING
How Can Heel Spurs Affect Daily Life?
Symptomatic heel spurs can make everyday weight-bearing activities uncomfortable. Pain may be especially noticeable during walking, prolonged standing, exercise, or activities that repeatedly place stress on the heel and surrounding tissues.
Symptomatic heel spurs may be associated with:
- Heel pain and tenderness
- Discomfort while walking
- Difficulty standing for extended periods
- Reduced tolerance for running or exercise
- Foot and ankle stiffness
- Changes in walking patterns due to discomfort
- Reduced mobility
- Difficulty participating comfortably in daily activities
Heel pain is not always caused by the heel spur itself. Conditions affecting the plantar fascia, tendons, bursae, nerves, or other structures of the foot can produce similar symptoms. An appropriate evaluation can help determine what is contributing to the discomfort.
Seek medical evaluation for severe heel pain following an injury, inability to bear weight, significant swelling or redness, fever, persistent numbness or weakness, an open wound, or symptoms that continue to worsen.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center, complementary care may be incorporated into an individualized plan focused on helping manage heel discomfort, soft-tissue tension, mobility, and overall well-being.
