Understanding Infantile Colic

If your baby experiences frequent periods of intense crying and is difficult to soothe despite otherwise appearing healthy, you may be dealing with infantile colic. These episodes can be stressful for both babies and their families and often occur repeatedly during the first months of life.

Babies with colic may cry for extended periods, become increasingly fussy at certain times of the day, clench their fists, draw their legs toward their abdomen, or appear uncomfortable. Because crying can have many possible causes, persistent or unusual crying should always be discussed with your child's pediatric healthcare provider.

At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, our approach focuses on gentle, individualized complementary wellness care. Before considering complementary care for an infant, it is important to make sure concerning medical causes of persistent crying have been appropriately evaluated.

Complementary care should not replace routine pediatric care or medical evaluation. Any approach considered for an infant should take into account the baby's age, health history, symptoms, feeding patterns, sleep patterns, and recommendations from their healthcare providers.

Our goal is to provide families with an individualized, supportive experience while keeping the baby's overall health, comfort, and safety at the center of care.

How Can Colic Affect Babies and Their Families?

Colic can be challenging not only for a baby but for the entire family. Frequent episodes of prolonged crying can disrupt sleep, increase parental stress, and make feeding, bedtime, and other everyday routines more difficult.

Colic may contribute to challenges such as:

  • Frequent or prolonged crying episodes
  • Difficulty soothing the baby
  • Disrupted family sleep
  • Increased parental fatigue
  • Increased family stress
  • Difficulty maintaining everyday routines
  • Concerns about feeding or comfort
  • Reduced quality of life for the family

It is especially important not to automatically assume that persistent crying is colic. A baby who has a fever, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, fewer wet diapers, a swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, or crying that seems significantly different from normal should receive prompt medical evaluation.
